'War Horse' is among eight features released this season cast by Jina Jay.Jay"There is a palpable emotional energy which is available in the collective harmony -- as well as the contrasts -- in the good ensemble," states London-based casting director Jina Jay, which has handled numerous 2011's most impressive ensemble efforts, including two Steven Spielberg films ("War Equine," "The Adventures of Tintin") additionally to "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy," "Hanna," "Coriolanus" and Ireland's most financially effective indie film so far, "The Guard."The novelty helmet-eyed Jay, whose casting process is certainly "passion-introduced," is ongoing to develop into one of the U.K.'s go-to casting company company directors for just about any-list helmers, due to her all-encompassing unchecked approach and razor-sharp instinct for undiscovered talent. For Spielberg's "War Equine," for example, Jay cast unknown stage actor Jeremy Irvine inside the coveted lead role of Albert. Irvine had almost no professional experience before scoring charge in the Spielberg epic, getting graduated within the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts just one year earlier. Since it might be a job "where it felt natural to cast a mysterious,In . Jay attracted in the team of youthful casting company company directors to help her conduct searching within the U.K. and Ireland for your perfect 15- to 25-year-old."Finding Albert will be a huge challenge, and right from the start it absolutely was our chief focus," she states. Nobody quite hit the aim, until Irvine's agents Hatton & McEwan e-mailed Jay a portrait from the client, asking if he could read for your role. Jay's assistants Alex Duxbury and Katy Lake read 12 youthful stars your entire day Irvine first read, and Irvine's was unquestionably "the reading through through throughout your day,In . Jay recalls. "His interpretation in the material was enchanting, taking all the mess and loneliness in the teenage Albert, plus his profound pleasure and passion for Joey (his equine)."Spielberg agreed with Jay within the get-go the new-faced Irvine was their guy. Oscar Index: Descendants, Artist, Help Set for Ménage à Trophy
Welcome back to Oscar Index, your weekly awards-season rundown from Movieline’s Institute For the Advanced Study of Kudos Forensics. And to be honest, there’s not so much to run down: Descendants this, Artist that, some minor acting bumps and nudges… relatively quiet, truth be told. Now that I’ve totally sold you on this latest installment, let’s check out the races! [Click the graphs for full-size images.] The Leading 10: 1. The Descendants 2. The Artist 3. War Horse 4. The Help 5. Midnight in Paris 6. Moneyball 7. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 8. Hugo 9. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 10. The Tree of Life Outsiders: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn; Margin Call; My Week With Marilyn; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; J. Edgar; Shame; The Ides of March Theatrical audiences will finally get a chance this week to see what all the Descendants fuss is about — and there is quite some fuss, with the critical consensus favoring Alexander Payne’s latest in a way that previous installments of the Index pretty obviously foretold. A few key exceptions (including that of our own Stephanie Zacharek) stand out, which may actually lay the groundwork for a backlash as we head into two key dates: Nov. 23, when The Artist debuts in limited release; and Nov. 28, when the NY Film Critics Circle selects its award winners for 2011. If The Descendants can make it out of that space with its supremacy intact, not even dissenting votes by the National Board of Review or LA Film Critics Association can derail much of its momentum headed into December. Don’t believe me? Check out Harvey Weinstein’s recent PR blast for The Artist, a fusillade of magazine features, critical plaudits and word-of-mouth events featuring talent from the film. “How am I going to market a black-and-white silent movie?” he replied to NY Magazine’s inquiry into that very subject. “I’m praying. I’m going to church and to synagogue. And if that doesn’t work, I’m going Buddhist. And if that doesn’t work, I’m going Islam. Saturdays and Sundays are very busy in the Weinstein household.” That followed critic Kenneth Turan — not exactly whom you’d call an awards-season maven — stumping for The Artist in the LAT. Meanwhile co-stars Jean Dujardin and Brnice Bejo are in NY this week meeting the press, wooing awards voters and courting good will in a release cycle otherwise reserved for George Clooney and company. It is on. In other developments, one lone War Horse devotee came out for the film this week, while the punditocracy basically agreed that J. Edgar — the patron saint of lugubrious box-office poison — was done for in the Best Picture race. (They’re apparently holding out for Best Actor, but I’ll get to that.) With Warner Bros. down to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close as its remaining Oscar question mark, at least one observer went in for a closer look at the studio’s campaign for its Harry Potter finale. In short: Don’t bet on it, but don’t underestimate it. You have to continue to feel pretty good about Margin Call, which more awards-watchers and even distributor Roadside Attractions finally made a public point of standing behind. But arguably the film with the most mobility is The Help. Oprah Winfrey made sure of that last weekend while collecting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian hardware at the third annual Governors Awards: “”When I saw The Help, that is my story. My grandmother was a maid, her mother was a maid, her mother before her was a slave. My mother was a maid. My grandmother’s greatest dream for me was that I would grow up in a family and have a career where she used to say, ‘I hope you get some good white folks. I hope you get some good white folks like I have. I have good white folks.’ And the only picture I have of my grandmother is of her holding a white child in her maid’s uniform. So the journey from Kosciusko, Mississippi, where nobody ever even imagined it possible that you could be anything other than a maid who had some good white folks who would give you clothes and would let you take food home on the holidays, it’s unimaginable that I would be standing before you, voted by the Board of Governors.” Damn. Assuming Academy members don’t already feel like an Oscar for Oprah is an Oscar for The Help, few endorsements possess nearly as much heft. Of course, this isn’t Oprah’s Book Club, either, so wait and see, I guess. The Leading 5: 1. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 2. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 3. Steven Spielberg, War Horse 4. David Fincher, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 5. Martin Scorsese, Hugo Outsiders: Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris; Stephen Daldry, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; Bennett Miller, Moneyball; Tate Taylor, The Help; George Clooney, The Ides of March; Tomas Alfredson, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar Meh. Though you know what’s interesting? Check out this comment from an astute Awards Daily reader, who points out that in all the screening information and campaign-consideration literature currently being disseminated to voters from Sony Classics, nowhere in the Midnight in Paris section will you find Woody Allen’s name. Not for Director, not for Original Screenplay… nowhere. It’s the most specific statement yet (this year, anyway) of Allen’s disinterest in even being in the conversation about Academy Awards. But who wants his spot? Scorsese has the edge in the wake of Hugo’s big week, and Taylor enjoyed a boost thanks to Oprah, but if I’ve said it once, then I’ve said it a thousand times: Never count out Daldry.
Dancing With The Stars Final Three Revealed
First Published: November 15, 2011 11:29 PM EST Credit: ABC Caption The final four contenders (and their partners) on Dancing with the Stars, Nov. 14, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Theres just one week left of competition on Dancing with the Stars and the three celebrity finalists set to duke it out for mirrorball glory have been named. (Spoiler this story contains the results of Tuesdays elimination on Dancing with the Stars.) Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez and Rob Kardashian are the trio who will battle toe-to-toe next week to succeed NFL star Hines Ward and his Season 12 professional partner Kym Johnson as the newest champs of DWTS, while it was Hope Solo who got her ticket home on Tuesday night. This competition is one of the toughest competitions Ive ever been a part of, so Im grateful. It was an amazing opportunity, Hope said after learning the news that she and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, were going home. While sad to leave the show, Hope said she was looking forward to her next journey. Im gonna go back and try instead of winning the mirroball trophy, Im gonna go try and win a gold medal this summer at the Olympics, she said. Why not repeat, right? It was a headline raising run throughout Season 13 for the soccer star and her outspoken partner, Maks. Just a few weeks ago, Maks lost his cool, taking on Len Goodman and the judges for what he considered an unfair point-marking system across the contenders. With all due respect, this is my show. I helped make it what it is, Maks said after the judges gave the pair their marks for a rumba to Seasons of Love from Rent, on October 24. I love every aspect of it, I love every professional thats ever been here and I love every celebrity that puts effort into every week. Having said that, Im a little tired that were being judged, some on effort and some being picked on, on heel leads! And Hope actually referenced Maks now-famous comment, following her elimination on Tuesdays results show. Maks was amazing the producer of the show I have to thank you, Maks, for casting me to be on your show, Hope smiled. Dancing with the Stars Season 13 finals kick off on Monday night at 8/7C on ABC. 11-11-11
A Rocket Releasing release presented in association with Epic Pictures Group of a Canonigo Films/Capacity Pictures production. Produced by Wayne Allen Rice, Richard Heller, Loris Curci, Christian Molina. Executive producers, Shaked Berenson, Marivi de Villanueva, Carlos Gari, Russell Hollander, Patrick Ewald. Directed, written by Darren Lynn Bousman. With: Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Denis Rafter, Wendy GlennOne and one (and one and one and one and one) never quite add up to two in Darren Lynn Bousman's "11-11-11," a rather anemic entry in the biblical-prophecy horror subgenre. A creative payoffarrives too late to rescue either the pic or the viewer from a particular form of perdition, as Bousman tries to straddle the gaping aesthetic chasm between his "Saw" efforts and his purposely flamboyant and outrageous "Repo! The Genetic Opera." Despite the obvious novelty of its timing, the film's low-tech effects and lack of tension ensure its title will also be its sell-by date. Given the competition among horror filmmakers to push the special-effects envelope and Bousman's obvious fluency with the conventions of torture porn, there's a curiously lethargic strategy at work in "11-11-11."The obscured visuals rapidly diminish interest by keeping the audience unsure about what exactly is going on during moments of crisis, and the stagy effects (which include Murnau-era visagesfloating in space, vaporous phantasms appearing on surveillance cameras and shrouded ghouls materializing abruptly) bring the overall effect very close to camp, without the fun. Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) is a hack author of the Nelson DeMille variety who disparages his own work as he tries to cope with the untimely loss of his wife and child. At a 12-step mourners' meeting, he meets Sadie (Wendy Glenn), who witnesses the first of many calamitous 11-11-related events that will plague Joseph throughout the movie: Right after he says goodbye to Sadie, his car promptly collides with another and bursts into flames. Joseph's OK, although the vehicular stunt strains credulity and physics (the whole thing seems to happen in about 11 seconds). Although Joseph and Sadie's relationship, unlike that car, seems to be gaining traction, the author is suddenly called away to Barcelona, where his father (Denis Rafter) is dying. Once there, Joseph begins to realize the increased frequency with which the magic numbers are corresponding to the tragic events in his life (his son, for instance, died at 11:11 a.m.), as well as to the mysterious goings-on at the cultish church led by his brother, Samuel (Michael Landes). Adding to the mystery are Samuel's weird housekeeper (Salome Jimenez), a murderous parishioner, the free-roaming vapors, cats and dogs sleeping together, and an imminent sense of the apocalypse. Despite the rather static progression of "11-11-11," in which even the most predictable jump-scare tactics fall flat, the story's denouement reps a bit of a theological shocker; it might be well worth reconstituting into another movie, preferably one in which the buildup containsat least some rudimentary suspense. Not helping matters are the less-than-convincing performances by Gibbs and Landes, who admittedly don't have a lot of scintillating dialogue to work with. Glenn, by contrast, brings real presence to the proceedings, but she only bookends the movie, disappearing before the Barcelona sequence and returning for the payoff. Tech credits are ho-hum, and some of the lensing is simply befuddling.Camera (color), Joseph White; editor, Martin Hunter; music, Joseph Bishara; production designer, Mani Martinez; costume designer, Toni Martin; assistant director, Francesc Prat; sound, Jeremie Cuellar, Jordi Cirbian; sound designer, G.W. Cheers & Jeers: Two and a Half Men's New Good-Time Charlie
Jon Cryer Cheers to Jon Cryer for channeling Charlie's spirit on Two and a Half Men. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! In the hit CBS sitcom's funniest episode since Ashton Kutcher's debut, his Emmy-winning costar paid an aptly irreverent tribute to his dearly departed TV brother. "I don't miss the smell of vomit and lubricant in the morning," Cryer's Alan said of Charlie Sheen - er, Harper. "But I do miss him." The high jinks really got crazy when Alan experienced a psychotic break and adopted Charlie's identity, donning a bowling shirt and enjoying a taste of cigars, cocktails - and a voluptuous neighbor (The Event's Taylor Cole). Still, Kutcher got the episode's best line: After Alan found sheet music, panties, drug paraphernalia and a vibrator in Charlie's old piano bench, he termed them "songs, thongs, bongs and schlongs." If laughing at that line is wrong, I don't wanna be right. Did you think Two and a Half Men's homage to Charlie was "winning"? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
