How Aquaman Got His Groove Back
Aquaman Aquaman may be one of the most well known superheroes, but that doesn't mean he's one of the most popular. Though his fans know he's among the most powerful and fearless characters in comics, the general public has been laughing at the orange and green clad hero since his days on the 1970s Super Friends cartoons. Long derided because his main superpower seems to be his ability to "talk to fish," and due to his perceived uselessness out of the water, Aquaman is more associated with punch lines than punches. But the hard luck hero has been steadily working his way onto the pop culture A-List over the past few years, and his new comic book series has turned into a best seller. "I really thought the character had tons of potential," says Geoff Johns, DC Comics' chief creative officer, who is writing the book. "Having Aquaman be the king of Atlantis but a joke on land, that's a great dichotomy for a character." As part of a relaunch of DC Comics' entire line this fall, Aquaman was given a solo series for the first time since his last book was cancelled in 2006. Ironically, that was just as his mainstream image makeover was beginning. A guest appearance on Smallville (played by American Idol semifinalist Alan Ritchson) in the fall of 2005 was a hit with fans, and on HBOs' Entourage main character Vincent Chase got his big break starring in a (fictional) blockbuster Aquaman movie directed by James Cameron. More recently the sea king became the breakout star of Cartoon Network's Batman: The Brave and the Bold thanks to an unabashedly jolly (while still plucky) reinterpretation of his personality. Still, Johns felt that the new Aquaman comic needed to address the hero's laughingstock history. "You have the fans, like myself, who always root for the character, and you're always on the defensive immediately," says the author, who has previously rebooted other dusty DC franchises, like the Justice Society, Teen Titans and Hawkman. "And I wanted to take that approach in the book, that he's the ultimate underdog of superheroes. He becomes much more human and relatable by being underestimated." In the first few issues, police officers have mocked him to his face, and in a recent issue of Justice League of America (also written by Johns) Green Lantern, on meeting him for the first time, says, "I thought Aquaman was a sketch on Conan O'Brien." This honest take on the character has won raves from old fans - and brought in new ones. The first issue has sold more than 100,000 copies (an impressive number by today's standards) and with issue No. 4 going on sale this Wednesday - in comic book stores and online - the book ranks in the Top 20 for sales, according to Diamond Comic Distributors. Still, a recent cameo in an SNL Digital Short illustrates what he's up against. "It's going to take a long time to make Aquaman the coolest superhero there is, but I love fighting against that tide," says Johns, who confesses that water-themed puns are inevitable when talking about the character. Given that much lesser known heroes like Iron Man, Thor and Green Lantern have turned into Hollywood stars, could a screen-version of the King of the Seas be far off? "You will see Aquaman in a lot of different things beyond comics," Johns promises, but, "that's all I can get into now." One place where he could conceivably show up is Cartoon Network's upcoming DC Nation programming block, a partnership with Warner Bros. Animation and DC Comics slated to launch in 2012. Sandwiched in between shows like Young Justice and Green Lantern: The Animated Series will be animated shorts showcasing DC's enormous library. "Some are reinterpretations of characters that we know," says Johns, "some of characters that we never thought we'd see animated." Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

David Giuntoli: I Eat Far Away From Grimm's Corpses
Grimm David Giuntoli may play homicide detective Nick Burkhardt in NBC's fairy tale-tinged crime procedural Grimm, but in real life, he's not that stoic when faced with corpses - especially the fake ones used on the series. "I'm not usually easily disturbed, but I've walked on the set and been absolutely disgusted to my core," he tells TVGuide.com. "I'll always remember where I was when I saw this specific crime scene [in 'Danse Macabre']. There were rats crawling out of the stomach, out of the mouth of a corpse. The corpses, the prosthetics are so real that until you touch them, your brain doesn't understand that it's fake. It's terrifying. There's a lot of eating lunch in my trailer far, far away from the morgue set." From CSI to Grimm: A user's guide to TV procedurals Luckily for Giuntoli, Friday's Rapunzel-inspired episode (9/8c, NBC) is relatively light on the gore. The episode, titled "Let Down Your Hair," gives a nod to the classic fairy tale, about a kidnapped princess with magically long hair. "It's one of those stories that is more emotional, less 'chop off the head of the bad guy,' which is nice," Giuntoli says. "There's a murder... of a guy who was growing tons of marijuana and selling it. We don't know who kills him. But we find a strand of hair at the crime scene that turns out to belong to this girl who has been missing for nine years." The case holds particular significance for Nick's partner Hank (Russell Hornsby). "Hank has an emotional through line here. He's been... a detective much longer than my character," Giuntoli says. "He was part of the original team investigating the missing girl nine years ago, but he had to deal with the family and tell them that she hadn't been found. When we see this girl's DNA [at] the crime scene, it's a big moment for him. He has a lot invested in finding this girl." Check out this clip of Hank learning about the DNA: Like Rapunzel, missing girl Holly Clark (Mary Nelson) also has long hair that's been made unruly by living in the wild. Or is there more to it than that? "I see what looks to be a feral child out there that everyone thinks is just a missing girl," Giuntoli explains. "Only I think it's also possibly a creature. I don't want anybody else to find her first because she's been feral all her life and therefore [is] dangerous. But I still have this huge tug in my heart to save this girl, so I enlist Monroe." Reformed Blutbad Monroe (Silas Weir Mitchell) has learned to suppress his inner wolf, and thus is called on as Nick's liason with the creature world. "He wants to help me get the bad guys because he knows that not everybody's bad," Giuntoli says. "He's not bad in his core because he fights these urges. He knows it's a choice. It's kind of a love story with this girl and Monroe - not love in a romantic sense, but love in that they understand each other." Meanwhile, Nick is dealing with his own love woes, namely his relationship with girlfriend Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), who's in the dark about Nick's calling as a monster profiler. "I'm lying to her, and worst of all, the danger is getting closer and closer to the home front," Giuntoli says. "There's a huge amount of guilt involved with that. Basically, if I tell her that I'm a Grimm, she's going to think I'm crazy, and I don't want her to leave me. Not telling her is a very selfish thing, though, because she can't prepare herself for the monsters that are trying to get me." Best of 2011: The top TV moments of the year Despite his misgivings, Nick isn't able to deny his Grimm heritage. "Throughout the series, he does kind of summon up the DNA from his ancestors," Giuntoli says. "He has to learn how to physically fight these creatures. Dealing with the monsters and catching the bad guys is becoming more and more natural to him. It's something that his family's done forever. And I think it's something that when he heard he was one of the Grimms, it made a little bit of sense to him." The actor, who is currently shooting Episode 13 in Portland, promises more explanation into the Grimm lineage. "The mythology is pushed forward in a large way in this episode," he teases. "I learn more about my history, about my aunts, about my parents." Grimm airs on Fridays at 9/8c on NBC. In case you missed it, check out our video interview with Giuntoli:

Braodway's in post-holiday stupor
Broadway box office descended from Thanksgiving heights in Week 27 (Nov. 28-Dec. 4), but sales were still healthy -- at least at the more in-demand offerings, which saw some jockeying among the members of the millionaires' club.In the horse race for the lead spot, "The Lion King" ($1,682,555) unseated "Wicked" ($1,656,955). Meanwhile, "Hugh Jackman, Back on Broadway" ($1,520,929) managed the unexpected feat of topping the stellar sum it logged during the Turkey Day sesh, vying with "The Book of Mormon" ($1,374,003) in terms of packed-house attendance (both reported averages of 102% capacity) and average price paid per ticket ($158.50 for "Jackman," $157 for "Mormon").Total Broadway cume fell by $4.3 million to $23.8 million for 33 shows. Unsurprisingly, attendance slowed considerably, falling some 25,000 to 245,483 and filling theaters to about 75% of overall capacity. The 24 musicals grossed $19,552,706 for 82.2% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 194,702 and an average paid admission of $100.42.The nine plays grossed $4,242,979 for 17.8% of the Broadway total, with attendance of 50,781 and an average paid admission of $83.55. Gary Oldman on 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,' Its Insufficient Action and Playing Jim Gordon
Gary Oldman's pantheon of film performances include some enchantingly over-the-top figures, like his bad, Mozart-loving cop in 'The Professional,' hideously damaged pimp in 'True Romance' and also the maniacal Zorg in 'The Fifth Element.' But it is his quiet, understated role as upon the market spy George Smiley in the new film 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' that may obtain the criminally under-appreciated-by-the-Academy actor his first Oscar nomination. Oldman sitting lower with Moviefone to go over the task of dealing with a job made famous by Alec Guinness and why he needed a dialect coach to experience Smiley. Do you consider audiences may be disappointed inside a spy movie without any action? No, I believe that is what sets it apart. The correct answer is refreshing, this method. We have yet to determine what goes on. Many people I have spoken to actually such as the movie, but that certain factor that's missing may be the audience. But we're coming here on the wave of the very effective opening within the U.K. It had been number 1 for four days and it is there, will still be earning money. Therefore it states in my experience that individuals wish to go and find out a grownup movie without everything coming up. I had been reading through that you simply hired a dialect coach since you had not performed an english character shortly. Yes, well, you reside in the usa for such a long time. I've not really lost my accent, however the seem that you're encircled by ... my children are American, and thus there's just certain sounds which i make that aren't what can you call perfect received pronunciation British. And So I just needed a brush-on my British. Where have you read that? From the Q&A you probably did another evening in the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. I did not know I spoken about this! So Sirius Black does not count like a British character? No, it is simply different sounds you need to make. And that is kind of very Oxbridge, Whitehall vowels that certain needs to use. I believe extremely common. Take Sean Penn for instance, if he was playing someone from NY, he'd need to have a voice coach because he's from La. And Toby Johnson, he's Scots within this [and he isn't in tangible existence] to ensure that was a highlight he was doing. Have you have trepidation in dealing with a job that's so recognized with Alec Guinness? Yeah. He managed to get a lot their own. Others have performed Smiley however in different guise, different shapes. But Guinness was a significant dragon to slay, simply to really start it, get him from ... well, the dragon's inside your mind, is not he? Had you viewed the miniseries? Yeah, I'd seen it in '79 if this was on. I believe I recall it much better than I actually do. However, you designed a point to not rewatch it before doing the film? No, I did not desire to be kind of contaminated because of it. Almost always there is the risk it's so fresh inside your mind that you are doing kind of an impersonation. Had you met Mister Alec? No, I'd not met him, but my manager was once a Broadway producer and did maybe 2 or 3 or plays with him and understood him very well. Not to mention we'd use of John le Carré [the initial author of 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'], and that he told some good tales. Guinness was very notoriously not happy with getting made 'Star Wars,' and you are in 2 from the greatest film franchises ever. Do you feel conflicted about large Hollywood versus "the craft?" Well, it's kind of perception, is not it, really? It relates to exactly the same commitment of your stuff. Whether you are playing Smiley or whether you are playing Jim Gordon. It is not as highbrow as 'Tinker,' however it takes great technique. Frequently the task of Jim Gordon and figures like this, as with Potter is -- as le Carré states -- you turn the oxen right into a bouillon cube. To evolve a magazine, you need to transform it into something much more compact. Lots of character passes the wayside and thus exposition and plot become character. You discover the figures are speaking the plot which takes a kind of skill to have the ability to accomplish it making the plot character, allow it to be credible and seem as if you are speaking just like a normal person. You're doing so admirably! Will you be up for additional Smiley films? They are speaking about doing 'Smiley's People,' that is really only a whisper, however I hear that they are really very keen to revisit it. And it is an excellent story. As we got all of the team together again, exactly the same creative people, yeah, I'd be up for this. Paddy Considines Directorial Debut 'Tyrannosaur' Wins Big at British Independent Film Awards
Opening in six cities over the weekend, Steve McQueen's sex-fueled Shame scored one of the top debuts ever for a film slapped with the dreaded NC-17 rating.our editor recommendsBox Office Report: 'Twilight' Leads Second Slowest Weekend of 2011 With $16.9 MilNew Movie Reviews: 'Hugo,' 'The Muppets,' 'My Week With Marilyn' Hitting Theaters'Hugo' Named Best Film of the Year by the National Board of ReviewWhy 'Shame' Could 'Legitimize' the NC-17 Rating'The Artist': How a Black-and-White Silent Movie Defied the Odds and Became an Oscar ContenderRelated Topics•Box Office Updates Fox Searchlight is planning an aggressive awards campaign for Shame, and decided to first test the appetite for the film in Los Angeles, NY, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. The move paid off, with Shame grossing a stellar $361,181 from 10 theaters for a location average of $36,118. Brooding and dark, Shame stars Michael Fassbender as a sex addict who must also cope with his equally lost sister, played by Carey Mulligan. "In a dismal down weekend at the box office, Shame delivered the highest per screen average of any film in this post holiday period," said Fox Searchlight's Sheila DeLoach, who is executive vice president of distribution. "More and more people will jump on the bandwagon of Fassbender's performance." Searchlight acquired Shame out of the Telluride Film Festival, and believes the film will play well throughout awards season, despite the challenges associated with the NC-17 rating. Still, the trick will be to attract sustained business, particularly outside of NY and Los Angeles, where the film did the best. Two awards contenders landed on the top 10 box office chart, led by Martin Scorsese's Hugo, which expanded into an additional 500 theaters over the weekend. The 3D family friendly movie--named best film of the year by the National Board of Review last week--grossed $7.6 million from 1,840 locations for a cume of $25.2 million. Paramount decided to roll out Hugo more slowly to take advantage of awards buzz. GK Films produced and fully financed the big-budget pic. In another victory for Searchlight, Alexander Payne's The Descendants climbed to No. 7 on the box office chart, grossing $5.2 million as it added 141 locations for a total theater count of 574 (this Friday, it will be playing in 850 theaters). Descendants, starring George Clooney, has now grossed $18.1 million and is the first limited release to ever cross $10 million in 12 days. And Descendants is already the No. 2 limited release of the yearafter Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, which has taken in a total $56 million. Midnight in Paris' tally includes $274,518 million grossed over the weekend as Sony Pictures Classics made one last push before the DVD comes out on Dec. 20 and re-released the film in nearly 300 theaters. The Weinstein Co. likewise had a prosperous weekend at the domestic box office with two award contenders, The Artist and Michelle William-starrer My Week with Marilyn. My Week with Marilyn came in No. 12 for the weekend, even though its only playing in 244 theaters. The film grossed $1.2 million for a 12-day cume of $3.9 million. The film had a stellar hold, falling only 33 percent from Thanksgiving weekend (most other titles fell off steeply from the holiday). In its second weekend, The Artist grossed $205,580 from four carry-over theaters in NY and Los Angeles and two new theaters in San Francisco. The black-and-white silent film was up a whopping 60 percent from Friday to Saturday, and posted a per theater average of $34,263, the second best of the weekend after Shame. David Cronenberg's awards contender A Dangerous Method, from Sony Pictures Classics, followed with a per theater average of $30,627 after grossing $122,517 in its second weekend from four theaters in NY and Los Angeles. Roadside Attractions' awards favorite Margin Call grossed $255,570 from 150 theaters in its seventh weekend for an impressive cume of $4.7 million (the film debuted day and date on VOD). 'X Factor' Results: Who Had to Beat It on Michael Jackson Week?
NY - What is known as "the longest running show on Wall Street" returns next week as UBS will once again let analysts and investors quiz entertainment industry moguls at its 39th annual UBS Global Media and Communications Conference here. As always, the year-end Wall Street tradition will put the advertising market outlook in focus, but also ask what's next for digital content deals and how much appetite companies have for potential acquisitions, among other things. Plus, executives, such as Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who will travel to the East Coast for the event, get to reassure investors and analysts that their companies can overcome current or future challenges. "What are the important trends in video consumption, distribution and monetization?" will also be a recurring theme, said Aryeh Bourkoff, vice chairman, head of investment banking Americas at UBS. Plus, the conference will explore whether technology companies are becoming more like media companies. As every year, the UBS conference will bring media, entertainment and telecom top executives together at midtown Manhattan's Grand Hyatt hotel Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, giving Street observers a chance to rethink their entertainment industry investment choices ahead of the new year. After opening remarks from Bourkoff, the UBS gathering will kick off Monday morning with the always popular ad outlook panel for the new year, featuring a group of prognosticators. A keynote appearance from Viacom president and CEO Philippe Dauman on Monday is expected to feature questions on the outlook for Paramount Pictures and the recent ratings challenges at kids network Nickelodeon. Among other big industry names speaking on Monday are Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns, AOL chairman and CEO Tim Armstrong and Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei. Tuesday's UBS schedule includes keynotes from CBS Corp. president and CEO Leslie Moonves who is expected to once again highlight latest ad trends, Time Warner chairman and CEO Jeff Bewkes and Netflix's Hastings, whose company has seen its stock fall sharply as of late amid what critics have called strategic missteps.Netflix wasn't at the UBS affair last year. Also on the Tuesday lineup: AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan, whose cable networks company is newly public, new Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia president and COO Lisa Gersh and Rob Wiesenthal, CFO of Sony Corp. of America. News Corp. deputy chairman, president and COO Chase Carey will wrap up the keynotes on Wednesday when he is expected to highlight that the conglomerate's business momentum has continued despite the phone hacking scandal. Some Street observers have said that Carey could eventually take over the CEO role from chairman Rupert Murdoch. Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav will also share his latest thoughts and outlook on the conference's final day. Just like last year, no speaker from the Walt Disney Co. is scheduled to present at the event. And a year after the then-nearing close of the Comcast-NBCUniversal deal was a focus at the conference, neither company is on the agenda for next week. Other key topics of last year's UBS conference, such as cord cutting and premium VOD, could once again draw investor questions this year. Plus, expect Wall Street attendees to be curious if sector executives plan to pay higher dividends and continue stock buybacks to reward shareholders, which has already been a focus for many media and entertainment companies. And to be honest, there’s not so much to run down: Descendants this, Artist that, some minor acting bumps and nudges… relatively quiet, truth be told. Now that I’ve totally sold you on this latest installment, let’s check out the races! [Click the graphs for full-size images.] The Leading 10: 1. The Descendants 2. The Artist 3. War Horse 4. The Help 5. Midnight in Paris 6. Moneyball 7. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close 8. Hugo 9. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 10. The Tree of Life Outsiders: The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn; Margin Call; My Week With Marilyn; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2; Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; J. Edgar; Shame; The Ides of March Theatrical audiences will finally get a chance this week to see what all the Descendants fuss is about — and there is quite some fuss, with the critical consensus favoring Alexander Payne’s latest in a way that previous installments of the Index pretty obviously foretold. A few key exceptions (including that of our own Stephanie Zacharek) stand out, which may actually lay the groundwork for a backlash as we head into two key dates: Nov. 23, when The Artist debuts in limited release; and Nov. 28, when the NY Film Critics Circle selects its award winners for 2011. If The Descendants can make it out of that space with its supremacy intact, not even dissenting votes by the National Board of Review or LA Film Critics Association can derail much of its momentum headed into December. Don’t believe me? Check out Harvey Weinstein’s recent PR blast for The Artist, a fusillade of magazine features, critical plaudits and word-of-mouth events featuring talent from the film. “How am I going to market a black-and-white silent movie?” he replied to NY Magazine’s inquiry into that very subject. “I’m praying. I’m going to church and to synagogue. And if that doesn’t work, I’m going Buddhist. And if that doesn’t work, I’m going Islam. Saturdays and Sundays are very busy in the Weinstein household.” That followed critic Kenneth Turan — not exactly whom you’d call an awards-season maven — stumping for The Artist in the LAT. Meanwhile co-stars Jean Dujardin and Brnice Bejo are in NY this week meeting the press, wooing awards voters and courting good will in a release cycle otherwise reserved for George Clooney and company. It is on. In other developments, one lone War Horse devotee came out for the film this week, while the punditocracy basically agreed that J. Edgar — the patron saint of lugubrious box-office poison — was done for in the Best Picture race. (They’re apparently holding out for Best Actor, but I’ll get to that.) With Warner Bros. down to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close as its remaining Oscar question mark, at least one observer went in for a closer look at the studio’s campaign for its Harry Potter finale. In short: Don’t bet on it, but don’t underestimate it. You have to continue to feel pretty good about Margin Call, which more awards-watchers and even distributor Roadside Attractions finally made a public point of standing behind. But arguably the film with the most mobility is The Help. Oprah Winfrey made sure of that last weekend while collecting the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian hardware at the third annual Governors Awards: “”When I saw The Help, that is my story. My grandmother was a maid, her mother was a maid, her mother before her was a slave. My mother was a maid. My grandmother’s greatest dream for me was that I would grow up in a family and have a career where she used to say, ‘I hope you get some good white folks. I hope you get some good white folks like I have. I have good white folks.’ And the only picture I have of my grandmother is of her holding a white child in her maid’s uniform. So the journey from Kosciusko, Mississippi, where nobody ever even imagined it possible that you could be anything other than a maid who had some good white folks who would give you clothes and would let you take food home on the holidays, it’s unimaginable that I would be standing before you, voted by the Board of Governors.” Damn. Assuming Academy members don’t already feel like an Oscar for Oprah is an Oscar for The Help, few endorsements possess nearly as much heft. Of course, this isn’t Oprah’s Book Club, either, so wait and see, I guess. The Leading 5: 1. Alexander Payne, The Descendants 2. Michel Hazanavicius, The Artist 3. Steven Spielberg, War Horse 4. David Fincher, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo 5. Martin Scorsese, Hugo Outsiders: Woody Allen, Midnight in Paris; Stephen Daldry, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close; Bennett Miller, Moneyball; Tate Taylor, The Help; George Clooney, The Ides of March; Tomas Alfredson, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy; Clint Eastwood, J. Edgar Meh. Though you know what’s interesting? Check out this comment from an astute Awards Daily reader, who points out that in all the screening information and campaign-consideration literature currently being disseminated to voters from Sony Classics, nowhere in the Midnight in Paris section will you find Woody Allen’s name. Not for Director, not for Original Screenplay… nowhere. It’s the most specific statement yet (this year, anyway) of Allen’s disinterest in even being in the conversation about Academy Awards. But who wants his spot? Scorsese has the edge in the wake of Hugo’s big week, and Taylor enjoyed a boost thanks to Oprah, but if I’ve said it once, then I’ve said it a thousand times: Never count out Daldry.
Dancing With The Stars Final Three Revealed
First Published: November 15, 2011 11:29 PM EST Credit: ABC Caption The final four contenders (and their partners) on Dancing with the Stars, Nov. 14, 2011LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Theres just one week left of competition on Dancing with the Stars and the three celebrity finalists set to duke it out for mirrorball glory have been named. (Spoiler this story contains the results of Tuesdays elimination on Dancing with the Stars.) Ricki Lake, J.R. Martinez and Rob Kardashian are the trio who will battle toe-to-toe next week to succeed NFL star Hines Ward and his Season 12 professional partner Kym Johnson as the newest champs of DWTS, while it was Hope Solo who got her ticket home on Tuesday night. This competition is one of the toughest competitions Ive ever been a part of, so Im grateful. It was an amazing opportunity, Hope said after learning the news that she and partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy, were going home. While sad to leave the show, Hope said she was looking forward to her next journey. Im gonna go back and try instead of winning the mirroball trophy, Im gonna go try and win a gold medal this summer at the Olympics, she said. Why not repeat, right? It was a headline raising run throughout Season 13 for the soccer star and her outspoken partner, Maks. Just a few weeks ago, Maks lost his cool, taking on Len Goodman and the judges for what he considered an unfair point-marking system across the contenders. With all due respect, this is my show. I helped make it what it is, Maks said after the judges gave the pair their marks for a rumba to Seasons of Love from Rent, on October 24. I love every aspect of it, I love every professional thats ever been here and I love every celebrity that puts effort into every week. Having said that, Im a little tired that were being judged, some on effort and some being picked on, on heel leads! And Hope actually referenced Maks now-famous comment, following her elimination on Tuesdays results show. Maks was amazing the producer of the show I have to thank you, Maks, for casting me to be on your show, Hope smiled. Dancing with the Stars Season 13 finals kick off on Monday night at 8/7C on ABC. 11-11-11
A Rocket Releasing release presented in association with Epic Pictures Group of a Canonigo Films/Capacity Pictures production. Produced by Wayne Allen Rice, Richard Heller, Loris Curci, Christian Molina. Executive producers, Shaked Berenson, Marivi de Villanueva, Carlos Gari, Russell Hollander, Patrick Ewald. Directed, written by Darren Lynn Bousman. With: Timothy Gibbs, Michael Landes, Denis Rafter, Wendy GlennOne and one (and one and one and one and one) never quite add up to two in Darren Lynn Bousman's "11-11-11," a rather anemic entry in the biblical-prophecy horror subgenre. A creative payoffarrives too late to rescue either the pic or the viewer from a particular form of perdition, as Bousman tries to straddle the gaping aesthetic chasm between his "Saw" efforts and his purposely flamboyant and outrageous "Repo! The Genetic Opera." Despite the obvious novelty of its timing, the film's low-tech effects and lack of tension ensure its title will also be its sell-by date. Given the competition among horror filmmakers to push the special-effects envelope and Bousman's obvious fluency with the conventions of torture porn, there's a curiously lethargic strategy at work in "11-11-11."The obscured visuals rapidly diminish interest by keeping the audience unsure about what exactly is going on during moments of crisis, and the stagy effects (which include Murnau-era visagesfloating in space, vaporous phantasms appearing on surveillance cameras and shrouded ghouls materializing abruptly) bring the overall effect very close to camp, without the fun. Joseph Crone (Timothy Gibbs) is a hack author of the Nelson DeMille variety who disparages his own work as he tries to cope with the untimely loss of his wife and child. At a 12-step mourners' meeting, he meets Sadie (Wendy Glenn), who witnesses the first of many calamitous 11-11-related events that will plague Joseph throughout the movie: Right after he says goodbye to Sadie, his car promptly collides with another and bursts into flames. Joseph's OK, although the vehicular stunt strains credulity and physics (the whole thing seems to happen in about 11 seconds). Although Joseph and Sadie's relationship, unlike that car, seems to be gaining traction, the author is suddenly called away to Barcelona, where his father (Denis Rafter) is dying. Once there, Joseph begins to realize the increased frequency with which the magic numbers are corresponding to the tragic events in his life (his son, for instance, died at 11:11 a.m.), as well as to the mysterious goings-on at the cultish church led by his brother, Samuel (Michael Landes). Adding to the mystery are Samuel's weird housekeeper (Salome Jimenez), a murderous parishioner, the free-roaming vapors, cats and dogs sleeping together, and an imminent sense of the apocalypse. Despite the rather static progression of "11-11-11," in which even the most predictable jump-scare tactics fall flat, the story's denouement reps a bit of a theological shocker; it might be well worth reconstituting into another movie, preferably one in which the buildup containsat least some rudimentary suspense. Not helping matters are the less-than-convincing performances by Gibbs and Landes, who admittedly don't have a lot of scintillating dialogue to work with. Glenn, by contrast, brings real presence to the proceedings, but she only bookends the movie, disappearing before the Barcelona sequence and returning for the payoff. Tech credits are ho-hum, and some of the lensing is simply befuddling.Camera (color), Joseph White; editor, Martin Hunter; music, Joseph Bishara; production designer, Mani Martinez; costume designer, Toni Martin; assistant director, Francesc Prat; sound, Jeremie Cuellar, Jordi Cirbian; sound designer, G.W. Cheers & Jeers: Two and a Half Men's New Good-Time Charlie
Jon Cryer Cheers to Jon Cryer for channeling Charlie's spirit on Two and a Half Men. Want more Cheers & Jeers? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now! In the hit CBS sitcom's funniest episode since Ashton Kutcher's debut, his Emmy-winning costar paid an aptly irreverent tribute to his dearly departed TV brother. "I don't miss the smell of vomit and lubricant in the morning," Cryer's Alan said of Charlie Sheen - er, Harper. "But I do miss him." The high jinks really got crazy when Alan experienced a psychotic break and adopted Charlie's identity, donning a bowling shirt and enjoying a taste of cigars, cocktails - and a voluptuous neighbor (The Event's Taylor Cole). Still, Kutcher got the episode's best line: After Alan found sheet music, panties, drug paraphernalia and a vibrator in Charlie's old piano bench, he termed them "songs, thongs, bongs and schlongs." If laughing at that line is wrong, I don't wanna be right. Did you think Two and a Half Men's homage to Charlie was "winning"? Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

Siegfried
Jay Hunter Morris in "Siegfried"
A Metropolitan Opera presentation of an opera in three acts by Richard Wagner. Directed by Robert Lepage. Conducted by Fabio Luisi. Associate Director, Neilson Vignola.Siegfried - Jay Hunter
Morris Wanderer - Bryn Terfel
Mime - Gerhard Siegel
Alberich - Eric Owens
Erda - Patricia Bardon
Fafner - Hans-Peter Konig
Forest Bird - Mojca Erdmann
Brunnhilde - Deborah VoigtHow difficult is it to stage Richard Wagner's "Siegfried"? Or more precisely, how difficult is it to find a tenor to sing the punishing title role? The Met Opera announced no fewer than two tenors, who then withdrew, before it came up with someone who actually could sing Siegfried for Robert Lepage's new production. If this is scraping the bottom of the barrel, then the Met should do it more often: Newcomer Jay Hunter Morris is magnificent, and he's mostly surrounded by equally wonderful singers familiar to auds who've seen Lepage's stagings of the previous two operas in Wagner's tetralogy. After "Das Rheingold" and "Die Walkure," Lepage's staging of this chapter of "The Ring" is less revelatory. Those humongous piano keys of Carl Fillion's unit set are more stationery, not so abstract, and are used primarily as a wall to project images. Acts one and two begin with a lot of hyper-realistic snakes and bugs that slither about, but when the keys turn, they morph into a beautiful forest suitable for your favorite fairytale. When the libretto asks for a bear, a mountain stream and a bird, we get precisely that. But all this literalism ultimately turns into kitsch. After grossing us out with those snakes and bugs, the forest's ultimate bad secret is a cutesy dragon straight from Universal CityWalk. Lepage and Fillion are on firmer ground with the more abstract earthscape and firestorm of act three. Perhaps kinks will be worked out in future perfs, but when those piano keys flip to create new formations, they often sound like they weigh every pound of their many tons. There have been more expansive readings of "Siegfried," but Fabio Luisi's conducting has real drive that doesn't lag for a minute of the opera's five-plus hours. Opening-night perf came in 20 minutes under the estimated running time. Morris, possessing a clear and focused voice, sings with great precision, and his lament for the mother he never knew is truly poignant. A sympathetic Siegfried? What a wonderful contradiction. Bryn Terfel continues to offer a commanding yet deeply conflicted Wotan/Wanderer. And Gerhard Siegel's Mime is beautifully sung. OK, he's playing a hate-filled hunchback, but within the twisted confines of the role, this is impassioned singing. The character Brunnhilde actually gets beautiful music to sing. Unfortunately, Deborah Voigt is no longer up to the demands of the role. The Met's "Live in HD" transmission of "Siegfried" plays in movies theaters Nov. 5.Sets, Carl Fillion; costumes, Francois St-Aubin; lighting, Etienne Boucher; videos, Pedro Pires. Rising Star: Grimms David Giuntoli
First Published: October 28, 2011 11:37 AM EDT Credit: Getty Premium LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption AccessHollywood.com Rising Star: Grimms David GiuntoliGrimm, the best new show on NBC this Fall, finally makes its long-awaited debut on Friday night at 9 PM, and the appeal of the cop drama-with-a-twist has a lot to do with AccessHollywood.coms newest Rising Star, David Giuntoli. As Nick Burckhardt, Davids breakout role in the freshman series finds him playing a detective, who also happens to be a descendant of the brothers Grimm the German siblings who penned hundreds of fairytales in the early 1800s. Only in this fascinating drama, those stories about big bad wolves were more truth than fiction, with only Grimm descendants able to see the creatures in their true form. This is a cop show and its small twist is that my perpetrators now can often be monsters, David explained to Access, on the phone from Portland, Ore. where hes filmed eight episodes already. Its subtle, but it creates a whole weight to it. Its kind of beautiful in its simplicity. The shows premise may be simple, but the role of series hero Nick is a complex one as the young detective balances his new life and abilities, which he uses to find the bad guys, or rather, the bad creatures. The reluctant hero is always fun to play. I get to have completely different lives, David explained. I have Monroe (played by Silas Weir Mitchell). Hes kind of my confidante/therapist/underground police officer partner and then Hank (played by Russell Hornsby) were detectives together and [the fiancee] Juliette (Bitsie Tulloch), who he has to now keep a complete lie from. Its incredibly fun. Its a dream role, and the St. Louis, Mo. actor has his lack of athletic prowess as a grade- schooler to credit for leading him toward a life in front of the camera. Despite that chiseled jaw, those swoon-worthy blue-grey eyes and his love of adventure (he went to the South Pacific on MTVs Road Rules), Davids early days saw him looking a little less than leading man-perfect. I was like three feet shorter [than I am now], until I was a sophomore in high school, but I had the same sized head and a** that I do now, David, whose 5 11 laughed. I was an awkward little fellow. There were times I would sit out entire grade school basketball games where theyd put everybody in. I think that kind of lead me to in high school, I started gravitating a little toward acting, he added. His Road Rules stint helped pay for college where he continued acting and allowed David to dodge the shirt and tie corporate ladder. It gave me freedom to not have to go into finance right away, which was what my kind of professional trajectory was at that point, he explained. After he finished the traveling, David started booking small guest roles on shows like Without A Trace, Greys Anatomy and Jennifer Love Hewitts Ghost Whisperer, and improved his acting chops. He also got a call for the Superman, reboot, reading for the role that eventually went to British actor, Henry Cavill. It was a really cool experience to get to go audition for these big hero roles like Superman, David said. And theyre rightfully so cagey about the script, they often send you sides that have nothing to do with the script itself and youre kind of left to guess whats going on. So its always kind of a fun process. Superman may not have happened, but a year ago, in December, Davids agent sent him the script for Grimm. Not long after, the director and the producers brought him in and he quickly locked down the role. David admitted its nerve-wracking hes carrying the new Friday night show, and hes put a heavy weight on his shoulders that it turns out well. But with the campaign in full swing, hes already seeing some early returns. I went out to breakfast with one of our guest stars, who Im friends with from home. And Im like, Wow, people are looking at me. What is wrong with my face, Amanda? Shes like, No, they recognize you. David recounted of his first brush with Grimm fame. My neighbors just started coming up to me, like, You told me you were an actor, you didnt tell me you were Mr. Grimm! Its charming and cool, I really do appreciate that part of it. Grimm premieres on Friday, October 28 at 9 ET/PT on NBC. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

Watch Sandra Bullock's Audition Tape From 1991
Sandra Bullock won an Oscar on her performance in 'The Blind Side.' She didn't win anything with this 1991 audition where she dons a huge mob-like hairdo and talks inside a thick Jersey accent. Film Clip Pointing 'The Stand' For Warner Bros?
Film Clip is searching within the Stand, and Warner Brothers and sisters is standing behind him. Deadline broke what is the news on Friday that Affleck might be the WB's choice to adapt the large Stephen King novel, marking the initial large announcement in regards to the extended-in-development project since August. Last we checked in, "The Stand" was rumored being helmed by the best David Yates of "Harry Potter" fame, but this, it seems, isn't any more the problem. "The Stand" is, to put it lightly, massive. Clocking in more than 1100 pages, it is among King's most broadly used works, however it is also one that's stood a hard time which causes it to be for the screen start to see the uneven 1994 miniseries for instance, really the only "effective" work for balance getting "The Stand" to reside in action up to now. Yanking this cat in the bag might be a massive moment in Afflecks pointing career, in addition to a challenging one. Nevertheless the timing couldnt much better: Affleck has certainly found his pointing stride, with last year's "The CityInch showing us just what he's produced from. On top of his capabilities behind the digital camera, Affleck might well be a perfect guy to see the movies lead role, Stuart Redman. But even if he doesn't star inside the film, Affleck has enough large title pals in Hollywood to fill The Will the brim getting a-List talent. Still remains to look how Affleck might tackle "The Stand," though I think about the film must discover in no less than two parts to shed a glimmer of sunshine round the book's expansive cast and plot. But merely because WB is homing in around the director -- which is still up up that Affleck will need "The Stand" or else -- doesn't always mean this monster from the tale has the capacity to discover. It requires one heck from the film author (Steve Kloves, is always that still you?) to exhibit "The Stand" in to a watchable, understandable story. Reveal everything you consider the choice inside the comments section and also on Twitter!

Not such a long time ago
Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas star in Not such a long time ago, about mythic figures unconsciously locked in small-town Maine.
Shot in Vancouver by Kitsis/Horowitz in colaboration with ABC Art galleries. Executive producers, Edward Kitsis, Adam Horowitz, Steven Pearlman, Mark Mylod producer, Kathy Gilroy director, Mylod authors, Kitsis, Horowitz.Snow White-colored/ Mary Margaret - Ginnifer Goodwin
Emma Swan - Jennifer Morrison
Evil Full/Regina - Lana Parrilla
Prince Charming/Someone Particularly - Josh Dallas
Henry Mills - Jared S. Gilmore
Jiminy Cricket/ Archie Hopper - Raphael Sbarge
Rumplestiltskin/ Mr. Gold - Robert CarlyleConceptually daring and very well cast, "Not such a long time ago" might be the kind of pilot that frequently can get experts entertaining -- a sizable, bold wager in the season with precious handful of of those. The pilot's fairy dust, however, doesn't extend with a second previewed episode, stoking concerns when the show can consistently conjure miracle -- overcoming formidable challenges, including ABC's muddled ad campaign, and inspiring audiences to compromise open its pages. No matter the pilot's charms, the prospects from the happy ending, TV-wise, look somewhat cloudy. Created by "Lost" authors Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, the series weds the flashing backwards and forwards of the series with Stephen King's whimsical side. Cutting from the fairy-tale realm and contemporary one, the series tales how a Evil Full ("Swingtown's" Lana Parrilla) cast a spell trapping fairy-tale figures -- including Snow White-colored ("Large Love's" Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) -- inside the modern capital of scotland - Storybrooke, Maine. Point relating to this insight comes because of a young boy, Henry (Jared S. Gilmore), who describes to new arrival Emma (Jennifer Morrison) that she's the daughter of Snow White-colored as well as the Prince, who -- like everyone else inside the quaint hamlet except the entire -- haven't any memory of who they might be. Like "Lost," the show intercuts between these two cell phone industry's, offering a dark and slightly revisionist see that old favorite anecdotes. For that city, the vibe gives mind King's "Necessary Things," with Emma clearly going to postpone for a while -- and facing a extended, uphill slog (ABC hopes, anyway) before she thinks Henry's crazy tale, a more compact amount handles to help undo the queen's curse. The pilot certainly looks great, which is difficult to imagine better options for your leads than Goodwin and Parrilla. The producers offer considerable fun with little particulars, in in the level of smoothness names (Jiminy Cricket becomes Archie Hopper) for the production and costume design. Nonetheless, the second hour looks a trifle shoddy Foreign exchange-wise, with trolls essentially described as ill-tempered hippies -- less than the stuff of storybook fantasy. Vancouver's lovely, nevertheless the show's prone to require more miracle than its lush forests. ABC clearly provides hiding for advisable who everyone else will probably be, attempting to lay claim they can women on Sunday -- a evening when increasing numbers of people view television -- by premiering the series against not just "Sunday Evening Football" but furthermore potential World Series coverage on Fox. Basically, the network seems ready to sacrifice males in exchange for attempting to draw a girl audience, and perhaps youthful audiences too. Achieving that may be a scenario of threads the needle to spin gold worth Rumplestiltskin, but good enthusiasm the pilot rightfully engendered, one hopes "Not such a long time ago" will rely on the task and fulfill who advertise. Otherwise, this is often just the latest ambitious concept unable to create its own storybook ending.Camera, Steven Fierberg production designer, Mark Worthington editors, Julie Monroe, Henk Van Eeghen music, Mark Isham visual effects supervisor, Andrew Orloff casting, Veronica Collins Rooney. 60 MIN.With: Jamie Dornan. Top Moments: Breaking Bad's Mind-Blowing Finale and Parenthood's Double Delivery
Giancarlo Esposito Our top moments of the week: 13. Most Revealing: When Naomi gets locked out of her house during a major political fiesta on 90210, she and her partner in crime, Austin decide to break in - which gets them arrested and thrown in the back of a paddy wagon. When the stuffy van becomes too much to bear, the randy pair strips down to their skivvies, and you know where that leads... As they reveal their feelings for each other, while in their underwear, Naomi's boyfriend, Max, catches them. Is there such a charge as breaking, entering and stealing another guy's girlfriend? 12. Most Hilarious Sex-Ed Lesson: Jackson Avery's mom Catherine (guest star Debbie Allen) - who, like everyone else on Grey's Anatomy, is a surgeon - stops by Seattle Grace to perform a groundbreaking penis transplant surgery. During the procedure, apropos of nothing, she asks a nervous-looking April, "So, when are you going to have sex with a man?" What? How'd she know April is Seattle Grace's resident virgin? "You keep looking at this thing like it's going to bite you," she cracks. Jeez, let's hope not. 11. Most Hilarious Head-Scratcher: While some characters are threatened by dangerous vampires, and werewolves are being turned into hybrids on The Vampire Diaries, Matt - one of the only humans on the show - is simply trying to understand his purpose in life. "Elena's dating a vampire, you're a witch, my sister's a ghost, and I'm just a guy wondering how life got so screwed up," he says to Bonnie. At least someone is questioning what the heck is happening in Mystic Falls. 10. Worst Memory: Answer-sharing isn't prohibited on The Amazing Race, but it should be handled with care - on both ends. After Andy and Tommy give Amani and Marcus, who are in last place, the answer to the Roadblock, the couple forgets it by the time they reach the Roadblock clue, and Marcus, who apparently is not the sharpest tool in the shed, proceeds to struggle with the challenge before teaming up with Lisa. Look guys, we know you're tired, but there is absolutely no excuse to forget a spoon-fed answer when you're on the brink of elimination. The bright side? You avoided being what would've been the dumbest elimination ever. 9. Snappiest Comeback: On Kim's Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event Part 1, her hubby-to-be Kris Humphries and sister Khloe clash when Khloe doubts he has good intentions in marrying Kim. "This is very opportunistic of you," she says. "How dare you question someone else's marriage?" Kris admonishes her, for once making a smart argument. "Are you sure you're not just using Lamar? He's a Laker, he's got championships." Burn! But honestly, Khloe, you've got nothing to worry about when this guy didn't even know his betrothed was previously married. 8. Best Last Words: Three of the chef-testants on Top Chef: Just Desserts learn about reality TV the hard way when they engage in a late-night, alcohol-fueled game of "Never Have I Ever." In the middle of admitting to threesomes, being handcuffed to a bed and running over a neighbor's cat, Matthew tells the camera the game is "ridiculously embarrassing and I hope it doesn't end up on TV." Silly Matthew, don't you know those words are music to any reality TV producer's ears? 7. Best Failed Call to Action: When he learns red-headed kids are being bullied, Conan O'Brien takes matters into his own hands and teams up with Elmo to squash the prejudice once and for all. In the PSA, Elmo teaches kids that having red hair is "really cool" by showing pictures of Shaun White and Rupert Grint. However, when he shows a picture of himself, the kids break into tears. "Elmo just realized that some redheads are really scary," the puppet says, before embracing the weepy tots. 6. Strangest Prop: The season premiere of OWN's The Rosie Show is not without its problems, but perhaps the greatest of them all is when the show's first guest, Russell Brand, suddenly bee-lines into the audience, picks up a child (that does not belong to him obviously), and sits the child in his lap on stage. He then jokes, "Do you think like in Oliver Twist I could start a little gang of child pickpockets?" before instructing the 6-year-old to steal his mother's purse. Things get stranger when Brand forces the kid to beg with his hands out and recite: "Can I have some mo', please?" We're fine, thanks. 5. Most Disturbing Charade: An already weird game of charades ("The world's best rapper?" "Brad Pitt!") takes a very dark turn on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills when new girl Brandi Glanville confronts her supposed teammates, sisters Kyle and Kim Richards. Brandi calls Kyle a "b----" for making her go first. Kim calls Brandi a ho for wearing short-shorts. Brandi accuses Kim of being drunk. And so on. And we thought the dinner parties in the 90210 were treacherous! 4. Best Musical Performance: When Penny has to confront her mom (guest star Megan Mullally) about her recent divorce on Happy Endings, her mom makes her do it in song so as to preserve their vocal chords for their big duet the following evening. The result is equal parts humorous, heartfelt and harmonious, as Penny sings about not knowing she was evicted when she was 9 and Mommie Dearest serenades her about the advantages of knowing how to make a garbage can fire. Sure, Glee has great choreography and fancy costumes, but Lea Michele could never give a garbage can fire the same gravitas. 3. Best Delivery: Parenthood fans are forced to reach for the Kleenex not once but twice during Tuesday's episode. First, Kristina gives birth to a beautiful baby girl named Nora (with the help of clueless dad Crosby), but then, just as Julia is admiring pictures of her new niece, the doorbell rings and co-worker Zoe is standing in the doorway, unexpectedly offering Julia and Joel her unborn child. Don't worry, Nora, Baby's First Friend is on the way! 2. The Writing's on the Wall Award: The Ringer producers weren't joking when they said if you find out Bridget's secret, you'll probably die. Siobhan's best friend Gemma, with whose husband Siobhan was having an affair, learns the truth about Bridget and it backfires when we see a bloody struggle that appears to signify Gemma's end. Whether she's actually dead, though, remains to be seen. 1. Most Mind-Blowing Death: Breaking Bad's gripping Season 4 finale is full of tense beats and a game-changing revelation (Walt did poison Brock!), but nothing trumps everyone's favorite meth kingpin Gus Fring emerging from a bomb blast seemingly OK, affirming our belief that he is indestructible. But a slow camera turn reveals that half of his face has been blown off. Just before he drops dead, Gus, in his trademark meticulous, calm and icy-cool demeanor, straightens his tie for one last time. It is absurd, but fitting. Chickens still run around after their heads have been cut off, and so does the Chicken Man. RIP, Gus. What were your top moments?
