Tate Taylor draws WGAW's Selvin Award
Tate Taylor is positioned to obtain the Authors Guild of America West's Paul Selvin Award for his modified script for your civil rights-era drama "The Help.In . Exclusive Video: Mad Mash-up: 2 Broke Powerpuff Girls
MAD The folks at Mad are having way too much fun. Monday's episode of the Cartoon Network series (based on the iconic humor magazine) features "2 Broke Powerpuff Girls," a clever mash-up of the late, great, adorable cartoon The Powerpuff Girls and CBS's bawdy new sitcom 2 Broke Girls. In the hilarious sketch, Bubbles and Buttercup, two of the super-powered tots from 1998-2005 'toon, are now hard on their luck and have turned to waiting tables at a dreary diner reminiscent of Max and Caroline's 2 Broke Girls workplace. (As for the third Powerpuff Girl, the narrator tells us "Blossom's doing great, by the way.") This comes on the heels of other inspired Mad mash-ups, including "My Super Supernatual Sweet 16," "How I Met Your Mummy" and "So You Think You Can Train Your Dragon How to Dance?" Dr. Ruth set for stage treatment
Dr. Ruth will be reimagined on stage this summer in the world premiere of "Dr. Ruth, All the Way," a one-hander starring Debra Jo Rupp (TV's "The Simpsons," "That '70s Show") and penned by Mark St. Germain ("Freud's Last Session"). Show will play on Barrington Stage's Stage 2 in Pittsfield, Mass., June 19-July 15 in a production helmed by a.d. Julianne Boyd. St. Germain's "Freud's Last Session," another therapist-centric tale, bowed at Barrington prior to Off Broadway, where the still-running production has been on the boards for a year and a half. "Dr. Ruth" marks the first production of BSC's New Works Initiative, in which playwrights and musical theater writing teams will be commissioned to write work that BSC will produce. Also on the BSC summer slate is the East Coast premiere of "The North Pool" by Rajiv Joseph ("Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo"). The psychological cat-and-mouse thriller about a Middle Eastern student and his assistant high school principal, to be helmed by Giovanna Sardelli, runs July 26-Aug. 11 at BSC Stage 2. The second stage will also feature the New England preem of Duncan Macmillan's two-character drama "Lungs," directed by Aaron Posner (May 23-June 10). Barrington Stage Company's Musical Theater Lab, under composer William Finn and Boyd, kicks off its seventh season with a workshop production of garage rock musical "The Black Suits," which runs Aug. 16-Sept. 2. Music and lyrics are by Joe Iconis, with a book co-written with Robert Maddock. John Simpkins helms. Mainstage shows will be "Fiddler on the Roof" (June 13-July 14); Arthur Miller's "The Price," with Jeff McCarthy (July 19-Aug. 4); and Philip King's 1945 Brit farce "See How They Run" (Aug. 9-26), helmed by John Rando. Fox to repeat Sunday 'Idol'
Fox will rebroadcast the special Sunday edition of "American Idol" on Tuesday. The episode will replace a scheduled repeat of "Glee" at 8 p.m., leading in to the president's State of the Union Address at 9 p.m. ET. While "Idol" found a tremendous audience Sunday following the NFC championship game, the episode didn't run until nearly 11 p.m. ET because the Giants victory came in overtime. Imagine reups Uni deal as first-look
Universal Pictures has extended its deal with Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's Imagine Entertainment through 2016 -- though the new pact changes its formerly exclusive arrangement to a first-look deal. Shingle has had a deal with Universal since 1986. This latest extention makes it the longest-running production deal in the studio's 100-year history. The new deal, replacing the one set to expire in 2013, will be structured to bring it in line with Universal's other current production agreements. "Ron and Brian have not only been our dear friends over the many years we've been at Universal, they've also been great partners," Adam Fogelson and Donna Langley said in a prepared statement. "Together, our companies have enjoyed making some of the most popular titles of the past two decades. ABC orders pilot for Shawn Ryan's 'Resort'
ABC has ordered the pilot ''Last Resort'' from writers Shawn Ryan and Karl Gajdusek. Hourlong drama details the establishment a new society in a world held hostage by the crew of a ballistic missile submarine. Project is being produced by Sony with Ryan set to exec produce. Ryan is coming off Fox's ''The Chicago Code,'' which ran for one season. Gajdusek wrote for 2004 Showtime series ''Dead Like Me'' and also penned the recent bigscreen pic ''Trespass,'' starring Nicole Kidman and Nicolas Cage.
